The traditional starting syllables for a baby's name, from the birth nakshatra.

Baby Names by Nakshatra

In Hindu tradition a child's name often starts with a syllable fixed by the Moon's nakshatra and pada at birth. Each of the 27 nakshatras has four padas, and each pada has its own letter. Enter the date, time and place of birth to find your baby's nakshatra, pada and the syllable to begin the name with.

You can then type a name to check whether it starts with the right syllable. Many families use this for the namkaran ceremony; others treat it as a starting point and pick a name they love that begins with the letter.

How do I find my baby's name letter?

Enter the baby's date, time and place of birth. Astromaan finds the Moon's nakshatra and pada at that moment and shows the traditional starting syllable for the name.

Do I have to use the nakshatra syllable?

It is a tradition, not a rule. Many families use the syllable for the formal name used in ceremonies and pick an everyday name freely.

What if I do not know the exact birth time?

The nakshatra pada changes every few hours, so a close time is needed for the exact syllable. Check the hospital record if you can.
