About Amalaki Ekadashi

The amla tree is worshipped as Vishnu's dwelling. In Kashi it is Rangbhari Ekadashi, when the Holi celebrations begin.

How to observe Amalaki Ekadashi

  1. 1Eat a light, satvik meal before sunset on Dashami (the day before) and skip grains from then on.
  2. 2Wake before sunrise, bathe, wear clean clothes and take the sankalp (resolve) for the fast.
  3. 3Offer water and Tulsi leaves to a Vishnu/Krishna image or idol, with yellow flowers, a ghee lamp and fruit.
  4. 4Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama or read the Ekadashi Vrat Katha for this Ekadashi.
  5. 5Fast through the day: nirjala (no food or water) in the strictest form, otherwise fruits, milk and phalahar -- no rice, grains or beans.
  6. 6Stay awake in devotion (Jagran) on Ekadashi night if observing the fuller form.
  7. 7Break the fast (Parana) after sunrise the next day, within the Parana window and before Dwadashi ends.

Rules vary meaningfully by tradition (which foods are permitted, whether water is allowed) -- shown as a common baseline, not a single universal standard.
