About Devutthana Ekadashi
Vishnu wakes from his four-month sleep. Chaturmas ends, Tulsi Vivah is performed and the wedding season begins. Also called Prabodhini or Dev Uthani Ekadashi.
How to observe Devutthana Ekadashi
- 1Eat a light, satvik meal before sunset on Dashami (the day before) and skip grains from then on.
- 2Wake before sunrise, bathe, wear clean clothes and take the sankalp (resolve) for the fast.
- 3Offer water and Tulsi leaves to a Vishnu/Krishna image or idol, with yellow flowers, a ghee lamp and fruit.
- 4Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama or read the Ekadashi Vrat Katha for this Ekadashi.
- 5Fast through the day: nirjala (no food or water) in the strictest form, otherwise fruits, milk and phalahar -- no rice, grains or beans.
- 6Stay awake in devotion (Jagran) on Ekadashi night if observing the fuller form.
- 7Break the fast (Parana) after sunrise the next day, within the Parana window and before Dwadashi ends.
Rules vary meaningfully by tradition (which foods are permitted, whether water is allowed) -- shown as a common baseline, not a single universal standard.
