About Hariyali Teej

Hariyali Teej, in the monsoon month of Shravana, celebrates the reunion of Shiva and Parvati. Married women fast for their husband's well-being; unmarried girls for a good match.

How to observe Hariyali Teej

  1. 1Apply mehendi the evening before; on the day, bathe early and wear green clothes and green bangles.
  2. 2Fast as your family does -- many keep it nirjala, others take fruit.
  3. 3Set up clay idols or an image of Shiva, Parvati and Ganesha on a decorated altar.
  4. 4Offer Parvati the solah shringar -- bangles, sindoor, bindi, mehendi and a chunri -- and offer Bel leaves and Datura to Shiva.
  5. 5Listen to the Teej Vrat Katha with other women, sing Teej songs and swing on a jhoola.
  6. 6Break the fast in the evening after the puja, or the next morning, by custom.
