About Holi
Holi falls on Phalguna Purnima. On the full-moon evening the Holika bonfire (Holika Dahan) marks Prahlad's protection; the next morning is the festival of colours.
How to observe Holi
- 1During the day, help build the Holika pyre of wood and cow-dung cakes.
- 2In the evening, once Bhadra has ended, perform Holika puja: wind raw cotton thread around the pyre three or seven times and offer water, roli, rice, flowers, turmeric, moong and a coconut.
- 3Light the bonfire, walk around it, and roast ears of new wheat or barley and green gram in the fire.
- 4Bring home a little of the ash, considered auspicious, for a tilak the next morning.
- 5Next morning, play with colours -- preferably natural, skin-safe gulal -- and visit elders for their blessings.
- 6Share gujiya, thandai and other festive sweets.
Holika Dahan must not be done during Bhadra; the exact muhurta varies by place.
