About Janmashtami
The birth of Krishna at midnight on Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami (Shravana in the Amanta calendar), ideally with Rohini nakshatra.
How to observe Janmashtami
- 1After the morning bath, take the sankalp and fast through the day -- nirjala, or fruits and milk (phalahar) without grains.
- 2Decorate the altar and a jhula (cradle) with flowers; dress Laddu Gopal in new clothes, crown and jewellery.
- 3Spend the evening in bhajans and kirtan, or reading Krishna's life from the Bhagavata Purana.
- 4At midnight (Nishita Kaal), the moment of birth, bathe Laddu Gopal with panchamrit and Ganga jal, dress him and place him in the cradle; blow the conch and ring bells.
- 5Offer makhan-mishri, dhaniya panjiri, panchamrit and fruits (chhappan bhog if you can); perform aarti and rock the cradle.
- 6Break the fast after the midnight puja with prasad, or after sunrise the next day (Parana), as your tradition holds.
Smarta and Vaishnava (e.g. ISKCON) communities sometimes keep Janmashtami on different days.
