Makar Sankranti 2027

How to observe Makar Sankranti

1. 1Bathe early -- a holy-river dip is traditional; at home add Ganga jal and a little sesame to the water.
2. 2Offer Arghya to the Sun from a copper lota -- water with red flowers, rice and sesame -- chanting 'Om Suryaya Namah' or the Gayatri mantra.
3. 3Give daan during the Punya Kaal: sesame, jaggery, rice and urad dal for khichdi, and blankets or warm clothes.
4. 4Eat and share til-gud sweets such as til laddoo, chikki and gajak.
5. 5Cook khichdi (North India) or Pongal (Tamil Nadu), and fly kites where it is the custom.
