How to observe Raksha Bandhan
- 1Check that Bhadra has ended before tying the rakhi; the afternoon (Aparahna) is preferred.
- 2Prepare the puja thali with rakhi, roli, rice, a diya and sweets, and offer it first to the family deity.
- 3Seat the brother facing east and perform a short aarti for him.
- 4Apply a roli-rice tilak on his forehead.
- 5Tie the rakhi on his right wrist.
- 6Feed him a sweet; he gives a gift and his promise of protection.
