Chhath Puja 2026

How to observe Chhath Puja

1. 1Keep the nirjala fast through the day.
2. 2Prepare thekua, kasar (rice laddoo) and seasonal fruit, and arrange them in bamboo soop and daura baskets.
3. 3In the afternoon the family carries the baskets to the ghat (or a water tank at home), singing Chhath geet.
4. 4At sunset the vrati stands in the water and offers Arghya -- water and milk poured over the soop -- to the setting Sun.
5. 5Return home; many families light the Kosi (lamps under a canopy of sugarcane) in the courtyard at night.
